A nephritic colic is an acute pain that occurs due to hyperpressure in the urinary tract, as a result of an obstruction in the passage of urine (under normal conditions the pressure is 15 mmHg, but in renal colic may reach the figure of 100 mmHg).
In most cases it is an extremely intense pain that starts in the lower back area and expands, possibly causing some fainting.
Nephritic colic or renal colic constitutes 3.5% of all hospital emergencies, and is the most frequent cause of urological pain. This type of colic can occur without notice in people in apparent good health. It is usually more common in the morning and in times of heat because of the greater concentration of urine.
It is usually more common in males. The causes that can produce a nephritic colic are: Obstructive uropathy (obstruction of the urinary tract) by a stone or calculus; Calcium oxalate. The most frequent are: Calcium phosphate, Non-calcium phosphate, Purine compounds (uric acid, sodium urate, ammonium urate …), Amino acids (cystine), Others (calcium carbonate, sulfonamides), Non-lithiasic obstructions: in this group other causes like a clot derived from a kidney tumor.
One way to prevent it is, especially in summer, to hydrate properly to avoid the formation of stones in the urinary tract.
