In recent years, the use of antidiarrheal has changed and only its use is suggested in certain cases, advising to treat diarrhea only with rehydration.

Acute diarrhea in children should always be treated with an oral rehydration solution. Severely dehydrated patients should be treated initially with intravenous fluids until they can drink fluids by mouth. For oral rehydration, it is important to administer the solution in small amounts at regular intervals.

When there is acute dehydration, hospitalization is necessary, but the most urgent priority is to initiate rehydration. If the child can drink, the oral rehydration solution should be administered while waiting, and even during, the intravenous infusion. If the intravenous route is not possible, the oral rehydration solution can also be administered through a nasogastric tube. If the child vomits, the rate of administration of the oral solution must be reduced. One medication that can be used is DiarrhoeaRelief.
