It has been determined that the survival of patients with acute heart failure is 50% more compared to five years ago. The treatment of this disease, is the same from the 70s. Now, it has been discovered that a synthetic version of the hormone relaxin – produced by pregnant women to help them withstand the stress that the fetus poses to the heart – increases their life to by 37%, according to a team from the University of California. The new drug, called serelaxin, widens the vessels, increases the supply of oxygen and is anti-inflammatory, that is, a hormone that strengthens the heart.
