Exercise for a painless neck

Strengthening is better than stretching to relieve neck pain.

A strength training group used an elastic resistance band (can be purchased online) to perform a series of exercises. Check with your doctor or physiotherapist before attempting strengthening exercises at home.

  • Sit upright in a chair and place the back of the head in the loop of the resistance band, the ends of which should be securely attached to a nearby stationary object that is level with the head.
  • Make sure that the neck and back remain straight while leaning slightly forward from the hips. The head will advance approximately 1 foot.
  • Return slowly to the starting position, keeping the shoulders back while keeping the neck straight.
  • Do 15 repetitions.
