The treatment of brain tumors is radiotherapy. Depending on the result, it can cure, contribute to the treatment as in astrocytomas or relieve discomfort, for example, in case of brain metastasis.
The patient receives in several sessions the dose of radiotherapy planned in a period of several weeks. A single treatment with the corresponding dose of radiation would have associated very serious side effects. The most common side effect is that the swelling of the brain tissue surrounding the tumor (edema) increases provisionally. Other side effects can be the following:
- Limited hair loss, which improves after treatment
- Light irritation of the skin located in the radiation area
- Greater fatigue
- General exhaustion
- Light headacheConcentration disorders
In the treatment of the brain tumor, surgical intervention has preference, that is, the surgical removal of the tumor. However, the physician must assess whether the operation is technically possible and whether the intervention may pose a high risk or a serious additional overload. In special cases, the combined treatment of radiotherapy and chemotherapy is applied instead of the operation, as in the case of lymphomas in the brain.
