It is an inflammatory disease that mainly affects the joints of the spine.

It causes swelling between the vertebrae, which are the discs that make up the spinal column, and the joints between the spine and the pelvis, and can affect other joints. The most common of these diseases is ankylosing spondylitis, which primarily affects the spine. Although some specialists have classified this disease as follows: axial spondyloarthritis, which mostly affects the spine and pelvic joints. peripheral spondyloarthritis, which affects mostly arms and legs and ankylosing spondylitis.

The disease is more common in men and usually begins in early adulthood. If the rheumatologist suspects that the patient has ankylosing spondylitis, an X-ray of the spine and pelvis will be performed. And through an MRI he uses radio waves and a powerful magnetic field to provide more detailed images of bone and soft tissue.

Causes:

The causes have not yet been determined, the factors involved in this disease and its evolution are still being studied. Therefore, it cannot be prevented either.

Your symptoms:

Symptoms include reduced flexibility in the spine resulting in a forward hunched position. It is also common to experience lower back and joint pain. Inflammatory low back pain can spread to the buttocks, back of the thigh, and may have an alternating character. Spinal pain, in any of its locations, is accompanied by a global decrease in the entire movement capacity of the affected area.

Treatment:

It consists of the use of medicines or physiotherapy. Rarely, it requires surgery.

It cannot be cured, but medical treatments can help relieve pain and stiffness, and even stop or slow the progression of the condition.

Recommendations:

It is recommended to do several types of exercises:

  • Stretches.
  • Joint mobility.
  • Strength and resistance Postural exercises.
  • Breathing exercises.
  • Aerobic exercises.
  • Swim.
  • Walk 30 min daily.

In addition, it is recommended that the person preferably sleep with their legs stretched out, rather than drawn up, and better on their backs than on their sides. At work, as far as possible take care of your posture by avoiding sitting for a long time or in positions that overload your back.

Do not eat: Processed products, sausages, canned and refined. Saturated fats from animal sources such as butter, lard, bacon and red meat, and trans fats (abundant in fried foods, fast foods, processed products) that are detrimental to your health.

In cases of spondylolysis and spondylolisthesis, abdominal exercises with trunk incorporation or stretched leg elevation are not recommended.

Before stopping drugs and biological modifiers consult your doctor, due to the probability of recurrence of symptoms.
